How to Discipline Special Needs Children

In order to discipline special needs children it’s important to realize that children with special needs come with all sorts of personalities, temperaments, abilities, likes, and dislikes. While they come with their own set of challenges, they are also armed with some tremendous qualities.

Just like any child, it is important that we teach the child with special needs the importance of responsibility, self-control, and positive behaviors. As a parent of a child with special needs, our job is to arm our child with these tools so they can live a productive life where he or she can discipline themselves as much as possible.

In order to effectively discipline special needs children, consider the tips below:

• When disciplining your child, show them value by not focusing on the disability but on their self.

• When considering how to discipline special needs children, it is important to provide structure appropriate to your child’s age and developmental stage. This is critically important as you want to discipline your child depending on their ability and understanding and not strictly on their chronological age.

• When your child is displaying an undesirable behavior, consider the fact that the behavior could indicate a need. Evaluate each behavior to see if there is anything you can do to help the child in this area.

• Avoid being over-protective as this is easy to do. While your child does need you, they also need their own sense of self and to be able to experience life as much as they can on their own.

• Teach your child responsibility by giving certain chores, etc. they are responsible for. By doing this, you’ll give them a sense of accomplishment, value, and self-worth.

• Give your child choices appropriate to their age and development. Having the opportunity to make choices will help them feel important while learning to feel responsible for areas in their life.

By following these guidelines you’ll be able to effectively and lovingly discipline special needs children.
