The Basics for Kids Learning How to Read

So, just how complicated is it for kids learning how to read? In written English, letters stand for sounds. When you say the sounds of the word in order, reading occurs. Sixteen letters of the alphabet almost always show one sound. These are easily learned. That leaves only 10 letters that normally make more than one sound. Even a first grader can learn a few sounds for 10 letters, plus a few rules governing them.

Kids learning how to read are gently led through a series of steps. As they begin to respond, they begin to read. The time required to learn to read is different for each child. It will depend on the child’s ability to remember and apply the information learned.

After learning to sound out and pronounce words, students are taught simple, effective techniques for understanding what they read. If any of these essential blocks are omitted, reading falls apart.
