• State the objectives of the tutoring session before you start tutoring.

• Set distinct limits for each session and provide clear structure.

• Stick to the structure unless the student asks to work on something else. If this happens, reset the structure for the material you all will be working on.

• At the end of the session, review what you have accomplished.

• Ask the student to review the lesson and remind the student of anything he/she forgot to include.

• Slow down the pace and allow time for the student to fully process the information.

• Make eye contact frequently in an effort to keep the student engaged.

• Help the student maintain attention and encourage participation.

• If the student loses focus, take a 5-10 minute break and step away from the tutoring space to change the scenery.

• Explain information in a precise way.

• Never be vague.

• Break learning down into small, visible, sequential steps.

• Never make assumptions about what the student knows or should know.

• Prompt the student and inform him/her about what to expect next.

• Make expectations clear and concise.

• Present instructions in a step-by-step fashion. One step at a time.

• Create mnemonic devices to help the student memorize new strategies, processes, or rules.

• Verbalize your thinking process so the student can hear and see the process of "how to process information".
