Six Challenges that can be Solved with a Learning Tutor
Falling behind in school is not the only reason for hiring a learning tutor, although that is covered in the first two items in our list. Tutor help can also serve other useful and practical purposes even when a student's grades are satisfactory. Here are six major situations in which the services of a study tutor may be appropriate.
Challenge #1 Improving Grades- Sometimes a student gets "lost" in the classroom environment because he needs individual attention. It becomes increasingly difficult to catch up as the classroom moves ahead while the individual does not understand a particular skill needed to allow him to succeed. A learning tutor can help determine the student's individual need and take steps to get him back on track.
.
Challenge #2 Completing Homework Assignments- This is similar to the first case, except that when he is at home the student is often completely on his own. Sometimes just a little bit of assistance in understanding a task is all that is needed to help the student complete his homework assignments and turn them in on time.
Challenge #3 Instilling Self-Confidence- Sometimes a student may be bright enough to produce passing or average grades, and yet still feel awkward and uncomfortable at school. Sometimes he may not be putting in enough effort and is "just getting by" academically, but other factors may also be at play such as shyness, bullying, fear of authority, health problems, and so forth. A learning tutor can address these factors, as well. A good tutor will help your child become motivated and to build up his confidence in facing the situations that give him difficulty.
Challenge #4 Improving Self-Discipline- Some students fail to learn proper study skills and habits in earlier grades. Tutors can help your child excel by teaching strategies for listening, note-taking, and studying. A tutor can also model good study habits for the student.
Challenge #5 Test Preparation- Tests nearly always fill a student with anxiety and apprehension. Of course, the first step is to be certain that the student understands the subject matter. However, even then, there are certain skills that can be learned to improve the student's ability to produce test results that are consistent with his knowledge. A study tutor will share these tips. In addition to everyday test taking, the standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT bring about additional challenges. While the student can be given practice tests to improve his familiarity with the forms, the tutor will help the student overcome any individual problems and concerns that he may have.
Challenge #6 Advancement- There are a number of students whose abilities exceed the requirements of the class. These students often become bored if they are not sufficiently challenged. Tutoring can provide either more advanced work for the student or can assist the student in digging into more complex material in order to provide a challenge. Keeping a gifted or accelerated learner engaged and interested in schoolwork can sometimes be challenging, and learning tutors can provide your child with the stimulation he or she may need to stay in school.
There are many different types of school tutoring available, from in-person one-on-one tutoring, to group tutoring, to online services. An online service can provide instant interaction with a "white board," photo-exchange, and live digital voice. Other advantages include in-home service, flexibility, security, decreased intimidation and increased rapport, elimination of transportation costs, and generally lower pricing than other methods. Learning tutors combined with online tutoring provide the greatest return on your child's future.
