That’s why it’s important for a parent to know how to teach children manners and etiquette and to do so at an early age.

The following bullets will guide parents in how to teach children manners and also help both parent and child in knowing the proper way to act in the proper arena:

• Teach your child the difference between good manners and bad manners. Sometimes the difference in them acting the right way, boils down to a basic understanding of what they both mean.

• Make sure they understand the consequences of displaying bad manners and reprimand accordingly. Set ground rules before you go anywhere and let them know that you want them to be on their best behavior.

• Be a good role model. Children will often “do as they see” so make sure you are using the appropriate manners in front of them.

• Reward for good manners. Children respond well to positive reinforcement, so be sure to show them how proud you are when they act appropriately.

• Try not to humiliate or reprimand them for having bad manners in front of others. Wait until you are one-on-one to explain what they did wrong and how it should be handled.

Overall, have respect for your child’s learning process and realize that learning good manners does not happen overnight. Knowing how to teach children manners is only half the battle. Keep working with them and soon you will notice the difference in your child for the better.
