Discover How My Personal Online & Face To Face Tutoring Can Boost Your Child's Grades
As an honor student working on a degree in Mechanical Engineering, I accepted a "Work Study" job to earn some extra money. I found out then that I really enjoyed tutoring. After 25 years in Engineering and Operations Supervision, I retired and pursued my interest in education.
Inspired by the frequent reports that showed unfavorable comparisons in the math achievement of American youth, when compared to youth from other countries, I wanted to make a difference. In 2009, at the age of 55, I obtained a Masters degree in Education Specializing in Math.
Although a need for qualified Math teachers remains, the current economic downturn hit North Carolina particularly hard. As a result, it took some time to find a full time teaching position. While waiting to find a teaching job, I became a WyzAnt Tutor.
As a WyzAnt tutor, I did face to face tutoring with high school students and adults taking college courses. Overall I enjoyed this experience. The primary drawback for both my clients and I involved traveling.
If I accepted a client that involved a 20 minute drive, it would typically take two hours to provide one hour of service. Frequently I would meet a client at a local library or a nearby coffee shop. This often meant that a parent would have to take time from their busy schedule to transport their child.
One of the many advantages of online tutoring is the elimination of the transportation issue, both in terms of time and cost. All that is needed is a schedule opening for me and my student.
This past spring I taught 8th Grade Math and Geometry at Chewning Middle School in Durham, NC. Chewning had been the poorest performing middle school in Durham County for several years. After working with the students for only 10 weeks prior to the End of Grade Exams I achieved "High Growth" at 66.4% and improved proficiency from 51.8% in 2011 to 59.9% in 2012. Chewning was no longer the poorest performing middle school in Durham. The students that improved the most were those who were able to attend my after school tutoring sessions.
I have found that I can make a big difference with almost every student if I can find enough one on one time with him or her. Unfortunately, large class sizes and other constraints in a public school make this very difficult.
Technology in the classroom can help to overcome some of the limitations. Presenting information to students in a manner that is more like the social networking world they live in can overcome some problems.
Ultimately, I believe that the optimal approach for fast paced learning is a one on one situation that takes advantage of technology. The answer is online tutoring.
