Discover How My Personal Online & Face To Face Tutoring Can Boost Your Child's Grades
Why use an on-line tutoring service? I asked myself the same question not long ago. I’ve been a teacher for over twenty years and I’ve taught every grade from kindergarten through college. I strove to make learning engaging, and while students were in my classroom, they were excited about their lessons. But that excitement faded when overwhelming homework challenges left them dazed. My goal as a teacher became to extend the excitement of a seated classroom to a student’s homework hours.
Frankly, you have options as a parent. You can try and work with your student yourself. But it can be hard to fulfill the role as both parent and teacher. If your child has learning issues or is struggling in school, a parent might not be familiar with the optimum strategies to use. You can take your child to a learning center. In our immediate area, there are three such learning centers, all staffed with knowledgeable tutors. But these centers tend to be expensive and want you to commit to a long-term contract. Typically, one tutor will work with 5 or more students at a time. Then there is the time you must take to drive your student to the center and wait until the session is done, then drive home again. Particularly in bad weather, this can be an unattractive option!
What about a private tutor? You might be lucky enough to find a tutor who will come to your home, but you can expect to pay top dollar for the services. It’s hard to be sure if a tutor is really qualified in the subject areas your child needs, and often young students are intimidated by working with a veritable stranger, even if they are nice and smile a lot.
Online tutoring services have become a viable option in the 21st century. This offers the parent the advantage of not having to leave home and use both gas and time to transport the student. Most kids are familiar with computers and are not at all threatened by using online tools. But if you go with a tutoring service online, you are usually limited to a half hour session and your child will not always get the same tutor. So the tutor will most likely be a stranger to your child and not have the time to really do more than answer some homework questions. Tutors for this type of service are generally not screened for experience or licenses.
What’s left, then? For the last two years, I have mulled this problem over. While I mulled, I completed my EdD (Doctor of Education) and wrote my dissertation on critical literacy for adolescents. At the end of that particular journey, I found my answer: An online tutoring service staffed by the same caring, competent teacher who would be able to work with a student one-on-one using proven technological tools.
1,2,3, TutorMeNow offers your student the ability to work with me from any computer with an internet link, using both the virtual white board and voice microphone inside the online classroom. I offer easy, online scheduling with flexible hours, and I place extra emphasis on teaching students how to get the most out of their schoolwork by using proven reading, writing, and study strategies. I take the time to build a rapport with my students, and I spend the last five minutes of each lesson in consultation with the parent to keep them in the loop of learning and appraised of their child's progress. I am also happy to provide phone consultations to your child's classroom teachers.
Truthfully, you can probably find a cheaper alternative by using a free homework helpline. But success in the 21st century will depend upon a student's competency in critical thinking and literacy, something a free homework helpline cannot address. Think of all you invest into your child. Isn't the right tutor worth it?
