Acknowledging Your Child’s Accomplishments

By Meaghan Montrose

The goal of parents is to raise a child who will be smart, independent, and happy. There are so many things that we as parents go do to reach this goal. Just a few of these actions include:

1. Reading to and with your child.
2. Communicating with your child’s teachers.
3. Encouraging your child’s interests (such as piano lesson, joining Cub Scouts, or playing Tee Ball)
4. Spending one-on-one time with your child. (You don’t need to do anything in particular)
5. Acknowledging your child’s accomplishments.

I think this last point is an important one that is often overlooked. Children want to feel that they have done something well or accomplished something special. As they are developing and growing, they need to have positive reinforcement otherwise they will seek attention another way by acting out. How many times have you yelled at your child or pointed out something that they have done wrong? On the other hand, how often to you let them know they have “done a good job” or that you are “proud of them”? This acknowledgment can go a long way.

One way to positively reinforce your child is to show interest in their many “creations”. Children will often come home with artwork from school or daycare. Instead of immediately tossing the work aside, try to do something meaningful with it. The Simple Mom recently posted a blog article with suggestions of What to Do with Kids’ Artwork. Some ideas include passing the pieces along to grandparents or other families or framing the artwork in a particular room in the house (and rotating the pieces as new work comes home).
