How to Avoid Tutor Burnout

By Colleen Palat

Being a full-time tutor can sometimes cause burnout. Believe me, it’s not fun. I’m completely guilty of feeling so burned out at the end of the school year that I feel like I’m crawling across the finish line!

With so much on our plate and more being dumped onto it, it’s no wonder we feel stressed and burned out! With the new school year underway, let’s discuss a few ways to avoid tutor burnout and make it to the end of the school year a little less stressed.

  1. Learn to say “No”. You don’t have to volunteer to do every job that comes your way. Before agreeing to anything, make sure your schedule can comfortably handle it.

  1. Take one day at a time. It can be quite overwhelming to look ahead and see all you have to do. Take each day and it’s challenges as they come.

  1. Make sure you have some down-time everyday. It is so important to recharge yourself and spend a little time on you. If you have to, schedule it in. In order for you to be a good tutor to your students, you have to be good to yourself.

  1. Try online tutoring. Because online tutoring allows you to work from home, you won’t have to rush around gathering your tutoring supplies and hitting the road. Tutoring at home allows you to be comfortable in your environment. You can even tutor in your PJ’s if you want to!

  1. Get to know your students. Learn their likes and dislikes. Building a positive rapport with them in the beginning will make for enjoyable time with them.

  1. Keep your eye on the prize. Don’t lose sight of why you tutor. It can sometimes become easy to forget why you do it with the stresses of the day. Remind yourself often of all the good you are doing for your students.

Remember: to be a good tutor you have to take care of yourself, too. Don’t leave yourself out of the equation!
