Whether you have a professional job on the side and are trying to capitalize on your down time or you’re a stay-at-home mom who needs the extra income and ease of working out of the home—starting your in-home tutoring business is a lucrative way to maximize your income. In general, tutoring is low-cost business that works well for stay-at-home moms, home schooling parents, and even college students who want to earn income on the side. Not to mention, there are more than 1 million individuals nationwide that have started their own tutoring business, according to the National Tutoring Association.

Based on your skill set, you can tutor students in grade school, junior high and high school who need help with their academic work. Not to mention, you can also tutor foreigners in studying English as a second language. The important element of this business is your knowledge of the subject matter. While a college degree or teaching certificate may not be required, you need to have a full grasp of the subject matter especially if you are going to tutor High School or college students.

Who Are You Best Suited To Teach?

Who you’re best suited to teach depends on what your area of expertise is. If you have a college degree—it’s viable that you can teach High School students depending on what your specific area of study was.

Market Your Tutoring Business

To market this business, approach schools in your area. You can talk with the principal or the teachers letting them know of your skills and qualifications (bring your flyer or brochure). Request permission if you could promote your business in the school by posting flyers in their bulletin boards or in places where the kids hang out. Or better yet, ask them if they could refer students to you who may need a private tutor. Also talk to school counselors and ask them for referrals.

Another excellent place to advertise is in the school newspapers, yearbooks or other school publications. Think of materials that are being sent to parents and whether you can advertise on them. You can also hand out your flyer to parents picking up their children after school.

Another excellent suggestion is to create a website that’s professional, authoritative and will adequately serve as your brochure and resume. You can market your website locally and post it in online directories in your area.

What Should I charge for tutoring services?

Before setting up your rates, you’ll want to first make sure that you do your research. Check out your city and surrounding local areas and thoroughly research what other tutors are charging. While in some cities it may be normal to charge $50 per hour—others you may be able to charge even more! Students tutoring in some areas can charge $15 per hour.

It’s hard to look anywhere these days and not see someone who hasn’t been affected by unemployment and the gloomy economy. Some states are feeling the wrath of the economy with as much as a 20% unemployment rate. Fortunately, home tutoring businesses are on the rise and are experiencing record growth.

This is primarily due to the fact that in order for students to excel today, they need to be able to get additional help. With school districts faced with larger class sizes, teacher layoffs, and even some schools canceling summer schools programs, students are faced with obstacles rarely seen before. In order for them to keep up and thrive, they need support and educational assistance. That’s where tutoring from home comes into play; students get the help they need at a price that parents can afford.

Increase In Home-Tutoring Demand Nationwide

As the demand for tutors rises nationwide, so does the need for good home tutoring businesses. With the opportunity to not only make a great income, but make a difference in a child’s life, more people are starting top realize the value in home tutoring businesses.

By starting your own home tutoring business, you become a tutor broker. Here you manage a network of professional teachers and educators, matching them with students in need of one-on-one tutoring. Not only is this lucrative, but you’ll experience the enjoyment of helping kids become educated. More often than not, it’s a child that would otherwise nit have the resources available to him or her.

Bottom Line

There are numerous programs out there that will help you start your own business. However, there are many things to consider before you make a final decision. What you are looking for is a company that is cost-effective.

While reading through posts on the Pajama Mommy Community blog I found an interesting one about Miracle Maps. This product contains a magnetic board with several magnets of items that you might desire to have in your life. The idea is to place the board with magnets in a location where you will see it everyday. The visualization of these items will increase your motivation and drive to achieve them. The concept of visualization is not new, but this product presents a new twist on an old idea. Since most of us are trying to earn more money and spend less you can inexpensively make personalized magnets of your own (check out your local craft store for customizable magnets) instead of purchasing the pre-made kit. Then just attach them to your fridge or a magnetic board. For more information, go to the Pajama Mommy post on Miracle Maps.

Many parents ask the same question: How can I get my child to complete his homework without it turning into a big fight? We all agree that there are far too many distractions in our child’s life today such as video games, MySpace, MP3 players, and cell phones. This makes it difficult to get our child to focus on his or her homework. Here are 5 steps that you can follow to limit the distractions and encourage homework completion without the constant battles.

1. Begin with a discussion on what your child. Found out the reasons why your child is having trouble focusing and completing his work. The problem may be the ability to understand a certain subject, the teacher, lack of interest in that subject, distractions or bullies. It is important for you to get a good understanding of what may prevent a child from learning. Find a time when neither you nor the child is stressed or in a present conflict so you can have a calm and open discussion. At no point should you let your emotions or disappointments interfere with the conversation.

2. Based on the results above, write out a plan of what action you will take to get the issue resolved. Sometimes this may be a simple phone call to the teacher or it may require a personal visit with the staff. Work out a plan to resolve the issue in a manner that is agreeable to you and your child. The goal here is to eliminate any problems that your child will bring up in the course of doing their homework. Keep tabs on the progress and be sure to take any action necessary to keep the ball rolling on resolving any problems.

3. Once you have eliminated the reasons why your child is distracted, it is time to lay out the rules. Today’s technical advances are quite different from the distractions we faced in our school days. However, we still had distractions. Remember what they were and how important they seemed to be at the time? Your child feels the same way. With an understanding of this, try to incorporate compromise into your rules. Have the child do a certain amount of their homework. After you are satisfied with the progress, allow them one break to send a text, etc.
Include in your rules exactly what you expect them to accomplish within a certain time period. Let them know that you will be removing all distractions which include phones, computers (turned off), MP3′s or any other device while they are studying. You must remain firm on this rule. Set it out in the beginning and stick to it. The number one problem in balancing school work with discipline is the ability to stick to your rules. At no time should you raise your voice or enter into an argument with your child about the rules you have set out. They were discussed and agreed to in the beginning, right? Upsetting yourself or the student will only delay and hinder the progress of the work to be done. Remind them of the rules and remain calm but firm.

4. Monitor your child’s study period. We have all gone through the “bored of homework” phase. Your goal has been to lay out a set of rules that will provide an environment suitable for study. Its only a matter of time (sometimes seconds!) before the mind begins to wander. A common mistake is to send the student to their room and tell them not to come out until they are finished. Plan on making several visits to see how your child is doing. Note their disposition upon entering the room. If they are staring into space, ask them if they are stuck on a problem. See what the issue is before proceeding to your next step of the rules.

5. Go over the work before letting them get back to the technical world. One of your final rules must be the satisfaction of the work before it is finished. When all work is finished look for positive comments and praise. It’s also a good idea to remind them on occasion how important school is and how it will affect the rest of their life.

If you are having trouble with your child completing their work and you feel that they need extra help, consider a tutor. It will save you a lot of headaches! The student may also be more willing to listen to the tutor and ask them questions. A good tutor will know what to do when spending time with the student. The important thing for you as a parent to remember is to keep enforcing your rules!

Rolling out of bed at noon, sitting with your laptop on the couch in your pajamas, sipping on coffee with your favorite soap opera playing on the T.V. This sounds like the perfect work at home experience right? Well, it sounds great but if this is how you work everyday your business if going to suffer.
There are plenty of benefits to working at home (perhaps a blog for another day) but one of the disadvantages is getting too comfortable in the relaxed setting. I am by no means saying that it is not possible to work effectively in your pajamas or while you are enjoying a morning cup of Joe. However, completely abandoning traditional work standards and expectations can take a toll on your productivity. If you become too relaxed and let yourself become distracted by the many temptations around the house you will end up in a routine of half work and half play that leads to half the success.

Here are some habits to avoid in your daily work-at-home life:

1. Don’t sleep the day away. Set an alarm to keep a relatively consistent schedule. Obviously there is flexibility here (that’s a major perk of working at home), but you don’t want to confuse flexibility with laziness.

2. Don’t stay in your pajamas all day! Although you aren’t leaving the house you have to remember that you are working. Staying in your PJs is something you want to save for a lazy Sunday. You should get up, shower, and dress as if you were going out of the house to work. (You can keep the slippers on!)

3. Don’t watch television or listen to the radio while working. These are just distracters that will slow you down. Instead, stay focused on your work for a few hours in a quiet environment. You’ll get much more work accomplished this way and then you can reward yourself by scheduling a break during your favorite daytime show.

4. Don’t mix your personal business with your work business. When you are working you want to stay focused on the task at hand and not be distracted by your own personal to-do list. It is best to devote chunks of time exclusively to your work instead of mixing in non-business related activities such as talking to a friend, checking personal email, searching for gifts online, or downloading music. As with point #3, schedule breaks ahead of time for dealing with your personal matters.
