Happy Earth Week! Tomorrow, April 22nd, marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Though we shouldn’t just pay attention to the Earth on one day, one week, or month of the year, it is nice to have a specific time to really evaluate our activities and learn how to make changes for the future.
The principles behind being “Earth friendly” include reducing our waste, recycling products we can, and reusing materials. For example, the Simple Mom provides 19 Tips for Making Your Home Paperless! Though the purpose for the post is more to declutter unnecessary papers in your home, you will still be reducing the amount of paper you consume.
Celebrating Earth Day is also a great way to spark your child’s interest and get them learning. Let Earth Day related topics be the focal point of your lessons. For example, have your child track the number of pieces of different types of trash your family disposes each day or week. You can use categories such as glass, aluminum, plastic, paper, etc… Then, use the data collect to construct a bar graph.
Here are some great websites to get you and your child learning about the Earth (and loving it at the same time!). The sites include activities, lessons, puzzles, games, and more.
