Easy Ways to Make Extra Money for Teachers and Tutors

By Shari Nielsen | January 5, 2008

As I was surfing the net, I came across a “soyouwanna.com” site which posted a 5 page article about becoming a teacher (click here). I skimmed through some of the points they made and reflected on my own experience. I have been teaching for 13 years now and although I really enjoy my career, I realize that I made a great choice by getting involved in private tutoring.

One of the points made on the website was the salary that young teachers would start out with. The article said that “in California, starting teachers can expect to make about $30,000 while in South Dakota, the average salary is about $26,000”. I remember when I was just starting out and I thought that that was a LOT of money. Time passed and I found myself working sometimes 60+ hour weeks, returning to school to earn more degrees, volunteering and getting involved in school activities, and trying to keep up with family life and bills and I soon realized that it really wasn’t a lot of money after all.

I knew I needed to do something else to get ahead and that’s when I started tutoring. I was amazed at the amount of money that I was able to make on the side. Often times it was double what I earned hourly from my normal day job. Now I look at teaching 5 days a week as something I enjoy doing, not something I have to do. I love the subject material I teach, I enjoy doing full class activities, I find interacting with adults – about any topic – stimulating, and most of all, working with students on a daily basis is personally rewarding. However, the money is not in the school system, rather, it’s in running my own tutoring business. Now that the web has allowed me to attract clients all over the country and tutor online, my client load has exploded, so has my income.

I looked around on the website for a place to comment. I wanted to make young, prospective teachers aware of the potential for tutoring but there was no place to record my thoughts. I wish someone had informed me of this avenue when I first started teaching. I would have made a lot more money, a lot sooner, by doing something I loved!
