You Can Excel in School
By Colleen Palat
In this day and age, it’s important to do well in school if you want to live a successful and fulfilling financial life. Now I’m not saying that if you do poorly in school your life is doomed. But those who make an effort in school tend to have an easier time throughout life attaining their financial dreams.
Do you ever wonder what sets the successful students apart from those who don’t do so well? There are a few characteristics and techniques you can do to improve your grades and succeed in school starting now.
1) Take school seriously. It’s a place to learn. While it’s fun to socialize with your friends (it’s important, too), don’t forget about the real reason you’re there. You want a healthy balance between the learning and social aspects.
2) Meet with your teachers on a regular basis. This is a great time to brush up on concepts you’re a little unsure about and to get some extra help. Meeting with your teachers (during their office hours) not only helps you with material you’re having difficulty with, but also let’s them know you’re serious about your education.
3) Those who have study partners for each class do better than those who don’t. Together, you can compare class notes, fill in any missing blanks of information, and have someone to help clarify information. A good study partner not only helps you study, but also can help keep you on task. If you notice that you and your study partner do more socializing during study sessions than studying, you’ll want to reel it back in or find another study partner.
4) Highlight important information in your textbook and take thorough notes. I did this SO much in college and found it to be so helpful! Highlighting important information not only emphasizes the important concepts, but helps you to find it quicker if you ever have to refer back to it.
5) Don’t be afraid to ask questions in class. Chances are if you’re asking it, someone else is wondering it. Remember, your education and learning is why you’re there. If something doesn’t make sense to you, ask for clarification.
6) Be up on your reading and assignments. These are given to you for a reason. Make sure you’re completing your assignments and putting some effort into your readings. If you can, read ahead to what your teacher/professor will be covering the next lesson so you’re familiar with it. This will also give you an opportunity to come up with questions you may have in advanced.
7) Attend class and be prepared. I know this sounds obvious, but it is certainly worth saying. You’d be surprised how many students miss class for the stupidest reasons. Come hell or high water, make it to class with the materials you need to learn.
In addition to these tips, it’s important to take a look at your own learning style and determine what other techniques may work for you. Everyone learns differently and has different learning styles. Those who are conscious of how they learn and take the initiative in coming up with creative and do-able techniques to help them learn will excel in school. You’ll find that by applying these techniques, you’ll be on your way to excelling in school and succeeding in life.
